Librarian chic

I don't know why I've never thought of putting this outfit together before, but for some reason, it never occurred to me. That is until I started to shop my closet for Petite Fashion Challenge #13!

This month's challenge was "Stylish for under $100: Put together a professional outfit (excluding shoes and accessories) for under $100." Here's my take on the challenge:

Skirt - $30, Shirt - $15; Tank - $19; Cardigan - $35
Cardigan - Zara; Blouse & Tank - Smart Set; Skirt - Jacob; Boots - Aldo; Earrings ToodleBunny from Shop Cocoon
I really loved this outfit - it made me feel very librarian chic, especially once I put on my glasses. I spent the whole day wishing someone would ask me about the dewey decimal system; but sadly, it doesn't come up to much when you work for a medical association. But a wannabe librarian can dream, can't she?!

Mad About Drew

I love Drew Barrymore. I think she's fantastic, funny and incredibly unique; so you can imagine my glee when she was chosen as this week's Inspiration Monday.

I really wanted to stay true to the inspiration and wear my Dark Side of the Moon concert tee, but while rummaging through my drawers I quickly realized it was being held hostage by my hamper. So, settled on a plain black tank.

Sweater - Joe Fresh; Tank - Smart Set; Jeans - Mavi; Boots - Aldo; Pendant - Forever 21

And now for a close-up on the accessories.

Style Profile: You Look Fiiine

Name: Danna Storey
Age: 26
Occupation: Website Content Co-ordinator
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia

When and why did you start your site?
I started my website back in November 2010. I was feeling bored of my little city and wanted to remind myself and others about how cool it really is. I really wanted to involve myself with and get to know the people, the streets and the goings on in Halifax. For a small city, Halifax is jam packed with culture, fashion and really cool, awesome people.

How would you describe your site?
Youlookfiiine is a place where people come to get quirky fashion advice, positive outlooks on personal style and outfit inspiration.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I get my inspiration from my friends, other blogs and the city I live in!

Who are your style/beauty icons?
I love Olivia Palermo, I love any woman who dresses in a casual but put together kind of way. I actually really admire the way Ellen Degeneres dresses - she couldn't look anymore stylish. I love wearing masculine pieces in a feminine way and I think she pulls that off effortlessly.

Describe your personal style.
I like classic. And unfortunately for my bank account, I like quality. An oversized button up with a pair of dark skinnies is my go-to. Since my style is so casual I really like to dress things up with costume jewelry and hair accessories. My mom really helps in this department. I often visit home to find a little pile of costume jewels and hair pins! Oh, one last thing, cocktail rings.

What was the best style/beauty advice you were given?
To dress for your shape and to not over do it. Red lips? Tone down the eyes. Huge earrings? Maybe opt out of that big necklace. I think it's important to keep a balance and for your outfit to have a nice flow to it. My mom is also big on an honest opinion when shopping, so she really helped shape my wardrobe. No matter how much you like it, if it doesn't fit properly, leave it. Thanks, Mom.

Where are your favourite places to shop?
I love boutiques, I love second hand shopping however I don't feel I have as much luck as some of my friends do! I am a girl on a budget and I can usually find pieces I love at Old Navy (shocking...I know), H&M (not so shocking) and The Gap. Gotta love the classic pieces, right?

What are your favourite trends for this season?
I'm loving the bowed blouses and oversized button ups. For hair I like to do a side fishtail or regular braid that seems to be all over the place right now.

Style/Beauty Pet Peeve?
I'm really not into cropped tights. I think it cuts off the leg and creates shortness where we want to see a nice, long line! Let's ditch this trend, ladies!

What are your five essential items that you think every woman should own?
A great pair of sunglasses, a pair of perfectly fitted jeans, a neutral colored cardigan that goes with everything, a Marc Jacobs bag (I have the Natasha Q and it just doesn't get ANY better) and tinted moisturizer. Oh, and a nice all-occasions dress. That's six....

Where do you see yourself and your site in five years?
I hope to still be inspiring fashion in a small city with a positive attitude and outlook. I'd like youlookfiiine to help me with a career in online writing and web design.

Ottawa Fashion Week: An Outfit Post

Unless you live under a rock, you'll know that this past weekend was Ottawa Fashion Week - a glorious three days where the city's most fashionable come together to celebrate the upcoming trends... and some how I'm allowed to attend to.

I never know what to wear to these kinds of events, but I knew I wanted to wear brights, so this is what I settled on.

Blazer - Talula from Aritzia; Tunic - American Apparel; Belt - Jacob; Boots & Ring - Aldo; Watch - Fossil

Did you make it to Fashion Week? What was your favourite show?

Snapshots from the Second Row

This past weekend Ottawa's fashion elite were out in full force attending Ottawa Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2012. I had the pleasure of attending for a night, and thankfully that night was Saturday. The lineup was stacked; I had the opportunity to see all of my favourite designers, and was introduced to a couple of new ones.

I absolutely love Ottawa Fashion Week if not just for the runway shows but for the people watching - it's so inspiring to see how some people put together such eclectic yet amazing ensembles. I always end up feeling inspired to try something new and unexpected.

Please, bear with me, I have yet to master the art of taking good pictures with my iPhone, so here I give you a sampling of some of my least blurry shots from the second row.

Tribal Sportswear

DeMOYO

This is the second time I've had the pleasure of seeing DeMOYO and just like last season I was not disappointed with what she sent down the runway. Her designs were a great combination of chic and ladylike, but with edge; you know the DeMOYO woman is a powerful woman.

Jana Hanzel and Emilia Torabi

Their latest collection, Coup de Foudre, was a drastic departure from Spring 2012's Tubalange, but was just as stunning and superbly crafted - exactly what you expect from Hanzel and Torabi Designs. The line was incredibly rich, from the fabric choices and patterns to colours - lots of brocade, leopard print and velvets all in rich jewel tones - and each look was topped off with a chic hat.

Eliz Bourk

This was by far my favourite collection of the night, I want every single piece that walked the runway. The colours were so vivid and the designs so youthful and fun. From the first look to the last I was enthralled.

Rachel Sin

I also loved Rachel Sin's collection, but apparently my phone did not. Sadly, these are the only two non-blurry pictures I was able to get - but trust me her designs, as always, were stunning!

For more Ottawa Fashion Week coverage - and better quality photos -  visit the Ottawa Fashion Blog.

With just six months to go until the Spring/Summer 2013 collections, I'd better get started on my iPhone photo skills - not a fashionable moment to spare.

Je vous manqué

Well hello there, I have good news: I'm back!

Okay, I didn't actually go anywhere, I just fell off the face of the blogging earth for a couple of weeks. And, I have no excuse - actually I have many, including: laziness, lack of clean clothes, PMS, a wild weekend with friends and the following days of recovery, work, life, etc. etc. - but none of them are good reasons.

But, like I said, I'm back - and with a new dress to boot.

This dress forced me to break my self-imposed shopping hiatus, but it wasn't my fault - I swear! I was walking through the Rideau Centre with my Director on the way to a trade show one afternoon and it was the first time I had set foot in a mall in weeks. As we passed Mexx she pointed to the dress and said: "You need that dress, it's such a Kate dress." I immediately cursed her for being a bad influence and continued on my way.

Fast forward eight days and the dress was mine.

I'd spent eight days thinking about the dress and telling myself that I didn't really need it, although I wanted it. So Friday afternoon I trekked back to Rideau and tried it on hoping that it wouldn't fit, or would look horrible; sadly that wasn't the case.

So there you have it, the tale of my latest splurge. I really do love the dress, the colour and cut are perfect! I wish I could wear it everyday (who knows, if laundry continues to win the battle of Kate v. Laundry, I just might)

To link up with this week's Inspiration Monday challenge I threw on an oversized cardigan and rocked a monochromatic chic look!

Sweater - Joe Fresh; Dress - Mexx; Heels - Michael Kors; Ring -Aldo; Watch - Fossil

Style Profile: Ottawa West Fashion

Name: Fiona Mitchell
Age: 23
Occupation: Recent Graduate (translation: desperately seeking professional employment)

Site: Ottawa West Fashion, http://ottawawestfashion.wordpress.com
Location: Ottawa, Ontario

When and why did you start your site?
I started the site in August 2011. I noticed there were not too many street fashion sites for Ottawa, and wanted to make one with a twist. The twist being featuring a specific area of Ottawa, the area where I live: Westboro, the West Wellington Village, and up-in-coming Hintonburg (hence the name, Ottawa West Fashion).

How would you describe your site?
My site has two focuses: The first is profiling street fashion. The looks, outfits and pieces that people throw on, without too much thought and run around to do their errands, meet up with friends or to go shopping in. I find these looks interesting because they reflect the individual’s personal style and they are not dressing for anyone else. It is also interesting to look at what is happening on major runways across the globe and then reevaluating which pieces and components of those trends filter down to the street level of fashion. The second focus is the stores and businesses in the particular area in Westboro, the West Wellington Village, and Hintonburg. These three areas are all stretched out on one long street, and have undergone dramatic changes over the last 5 years in terms of development and reputation. I enjoy promoting the various unique boutiques in these areas such as Victoire, Flock Boutique, Allegro, Red Velvet, Lida, Viens Avec Moi, AMH, and Rikochet Resale (there are more information on these stores on my site). I also make my readers aware of any sales or events that are happening in the area.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Since I feature street fashion, I get my inspiration from what I see people wearing around me. I am also very inspired by how people intergrate a more expensive basic piece such as a jacket or pants with affordable, or even vintage pieces such as tops, scarves, hats, purses, etc.

Who are your style/beauty icons?
My personal style icons would have to Dita Von Teese because she is an absolutely flawless beauty who exudes confidence and class, and Beth Ditto for taking wild fashion risks as a plus sized woman, which I find very inspirational.

Describe your personal style.
I don't take life too seriously, and that includes my personal style. I love vintage pieces such as shoes, purses and scarfs, but I also enjoy mixing badass pieces into my looks such as combat boots, or a necklace with a gun on it. I also never wear jeans, so I'm always either in leggings with an oversized top or dresses. I am also a huge advocate of sequins and own more sequin pieces than I probably should.

What was the best style/beauty advice you were given?
That confidence is beautiful, no matter what you are wearing.

Where are your favourite places to shop?
Zaras, H&M, Victoire, Flock Boutique, AMH, St. Vincent De Pauls (second hand store), Joe Fresh, Winners, Urban Outfitters and Sephoras.

What are your favourite trends for this season?
While it’s not a fashion trend, more of a beauty trend, nude nails and accent nails. I love seeing all the nude and beige nail colors or nails where the ring finger is accented in a bright hue.

Style/Beauty Pet Peeve?
Plus sized fashion! It is such a personal issue for me being a plus sized woman myself. I can’t stand when designers take a dress that has been designed for a size 2, and make the measurements bigger for a size 14. The construction for a size 2 is different than what a size 14 requires, and often these dresses are extremely unflattering or boring! We need more designers designing for trendy, fashion loving plus sized women, and these clothes need to be in more accessible retailers.

What do you never leave home without?
My notebook. When I’m not blogging I’m an aspiring poet so I’m always jotting down random pieces or inspiration.

What are your five essential items that you think every woman should own?
1)    Floral patterned vintage scarf
2) Classic pearl earrings (real OR fake!)
3) Combat boots for those days when you want to feel badass
4) Lacey underwear (confidence starts with the first layers)
5) Anything with sequins, because it’s fun to sparkle sometimes.

Where do you see yourself and your site in five years?
Hopefully not living with my parents! In all seriousness, in five years I hope to be working in a professional environment leading me to a substantial and interesting career either in the publication or fashion industry. For my site, I am hoping to be able to profile street fashion no matter where life takes me, be it a different city or country. I would love to eventually, with time and commitment, make my blog a staple of this community and have many contributors and readers.

What's on your nightstand?
Candles, incense, nail polish, and an empty Bridgehead cup.

Tell Petite Adventures readers something random about yourself.
I have a large collection of hotel soaps that I have collected over the years from various foreign hotels.

Style Profile: Lions Lace Lattes

Name: Ashley
Age: 28
Occupation: Fashion Intern with PARK, Photography Intern with FNO Canada, aspiring psychologist (in the process of applying to graduate school)
Location: Calgary

When and why did you start your site?
I started my site in June 2010. I was reading so many style/fashion blogs and wanted to become part of the community. I had already been testing out posting photos on Chictopia and was having so much fun, that I decided to start my own style blog.

How would you describe your site?
I would describe my site as a personal style blog that also documents my life in Calgary, and the occasional event and weekend getaway.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I get my inspiration from everywhere. Family, friends, magazines, TV, people watching, and blogs.

Who are your style/beauty icons?
I don’t really have any style/beauty icons, but in the fashion Industry I really admire Ben Barry and Coco Rocha. They are both Canadian and both speak out about body image, eating disorders, and changing beauty ideals which are some of the topics in psychology that I am passionate about.

Describe your personal style.
This is always such a hard question for me. I don’t like to label my style because I like to have the flexibility to change and try new things, but I’m definitely drawn towards more feminine looks.

What was the best style/beauty advice you were given?
Dress for your body, and don’t stress about following ALL the trends, just pick and choose the ones that work for you and your style.

Where are your favourite places to shop?
I’m a fan of boutiques, Joe Fresh, Aritzia, Winners, H&M, Forever21, Zara, Club Monaco, Aldo, The Bay, Value Village and other thrift stores. I like trying clothes on before I buy them so I don’t often shop online, but I’d like to start exploring online shops more.

What do you never leave home without?
My iPhone, wallet, and lip gloss/lip balm

What are your five essential items that you think every woman should own?
Black pumps, fun coloured heels, dressy yet functional jacket, blazer, white blouse.

What's on your nightstand?
A photo album, iPhone charger, and a novel.

Layer Up: Friday-Saturday

It's another two-for-one outfit post courtesy of the Fashion Challenge: Layer Up!

I know I said that Thursday's Yeti Chic: Casual look was my favourite, and it was at the time, but it has since been replaced.

Friday: Jacket over Cardigan
I have a casual Friday uniform. It consists of skinny jeans, boots, a cardigan and a scarf. But after wearing this beauty of an ensemble on Friday I have a new Friday uniform. Not only was I comfortable and cozy in my sub-arctic office, but I felt put together, and I loved the pop of red.

Blazer - Talula from Aritzia; Sweater - Bluenotes - Tank - Smart Set; Jeans - Mavi; Boots - Aldo

Saturday: Dress over Pants
This is a trend that I haven't thought about since grade eight, but I was up for the challenge. Plus, it gave me the opportunity to wear my often neglected American Apparel tunic. I love the colour and it made for the perfect ensemble for the Sens-Leafs game - all of my friends will be cheering for the Leafs so I'll look like I fit in, even though I will be cheering for the Red Wings (I believe they can win any game, even the ones they aren't playing in). It will even be perfect when we make our way from the game to the pub.

Blazer - Talula from Aritzia; Tunic - American Apparel; Belt - Jacob; Jeans - Mavi; Boots - Aldo

These two ensembles will definitely be repeated throughout the season.
