When and why did you start your site?

I started my site in March of 2010. I had been reading fashion & personal style blogs for years and just thought it looked like so much fun! I spent so much time emailing links to my friends and saving images to folders on my desktop that it just made sense to start a blog! I was very nervous about it though, and didn’t tell anyone about it for the first few months! 

How would you describe your site?

My site is simply just a collection of things that I love and things that inspire me! I feature outfit photos, trends, wishlists, and random goodies I’m lusting over! 

Where do you get your inspiration?

Primarily from other bloggers! I follow a lot of blogs and that acts as a daily source of inspiration for me! 

Who are your style/beauty icons?

My style icon is Blair from the blog Atlantic Pacific! She has the most incredible style!  I also really admire Olivia Palermo and Rachel Bilson, and often swoon over what the ladies on Gossip Girl are wearing!

Describe your personal style.

I would describe my style as simple, classic and very feminine! I tend to be drawn to things that are girlie & pretty! 

What was the best style/beauty advice you were given?

Hmm, I’m not really sure. I do believe that it’s important to know that you don’t have to follow every trend going - pick & choose what works for your body and own personal style! 

Where are your favourite places to shop?

I tend to do most of my shopping in person at H&M, Envy, Joe Fresh, Winners, and a local boutique called Je Suis Prest. I also love Zara, but we don’t have one where I live! Online I adore Shopbop and ASOS!

What are your favourite trends for this season?

There are so many trends I am loving this season! Mostly it revolves around color - I’m obsessed with burgundy/bordeaux paired with black, gold and leopard print! I am also loving forest green, as well as camel paired with gray! I plan on wearing a lot of loose fitting blouses, sweater dresses and booties this fall, and am big on polkadots, too! 

Style/Beauty Pet Peeve?

Jeffrey Campbell Lita’s and flatforms! And going back to what I said earlier, wearing trends that just don’t work for you! 

What do you never leave home without?

I’m fairly simple... as long as I have my bank card & my iphone, I’m good to go! 

What are your five essential items that you think every woman should own?

Oh gosh, this is tough. A day dress you feel great in and can wear anywhere. A really great fitting pair of jeans. A pair of GORGEOUS shoes you love and don’t have to save for special occasions. A favorite go-to nail polish. And good quality black opaque tights.

Where do you see yourself and your site in five years?

I honestly have no idea! As a lady in my (very) late twenties, it’s hard to say what will happen in my life over the next 5 years, let alone with my blog! I’ll just keep trying to grow and improve and see where it takes me!

The Office Holiday Party

Today's the day - the Office Holiday Lunch!

I'm the youngest person in the office by a decade so I'm shaking things up today and bringing out the holiday bling with a little bit of faux fur.



Holiday-Yeti-Chic? Can there be anything better?!






I think not.
However, I do think this is an ensemble that would make the Man Repeller proud.

One of Those Days

I was having one of those days.

I woke up late and threw on the first things I could find. I then scrunched some mousse in my hair and let it go au-naturel (I swear, when I looked in the mirror it looked like beachy-waves; however, the photos argue otherwise. I'm clearly going blind).  And, with that I was out the door. By the time I got to work (it's an eight minute walk) my hair had transformed itself into an 80s style, Flashdance-esque mess - not flattering.

Then, to top it off, I got a text from my ex-boyfriend asking if he'd seen me that morning on my walk to work - thankfully after I vaguely described my look, it turned out he hadn't, because that messy mane was something I could never live down.

Unlike my hair, the outfit I had just thrown on was perfect - monochromatic and sophisticated. It definitely made up for the monstrosity that had taken over my head.

The lesson I learned from all of this - mirrors lie when you haven't had morning coffee... and when in doubt, monochromatic is always the way to go!

Adventures in Pinterest, rd. 2

I've traveled south for the weekend, to make one last visit to my best friend before flying out west for the holidays. To celebrate, we're going to watch "Breaking Dawn" (don't judge, I know you like it too) and while at the movies we're going to munch on this delicious, adult snack:

Vodka Gummy Bears!

I found this recipe on Pinterest and had to try it. Easy, delicious, and made with real fruit juice (at least that's what the packaging said). What's not to love!

All you need is:

gummy bears

and

Vodka
I chose ABSOLUT simply because it was on sale

Combine in a glass bowl
This is very important, as plastic will absorb the vodka-bear smell and you'll never be able to get rid of it. EVER.

Stir.

And then let them sit for at least three days in the fridge and then ENJOY!

Honestly, best movie theatre snack EVER.

When and why did you start your site? 

I started AIF in 2009 as a creative outlet. I was living in a small city at the time that didn't have much of a fashion presence, and I desperately wanted to be part of a community of like-minded people. Blogging has turned out to be one of the most inspiring, satisfying things I've ever done! I'm amazed by all the people I've met in the process, and feel so fortunate to have had all the experiences that blogging has brought my way over the past two years!

How would you describe your site?

AIF is a personal style blog dedicated to my love of all things fashion. It's equal parts girlie, quirky and fun!

Where do you get your inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere I go! You never know when it will strike, which is what makes it so exciting... It could come from a person you see walking down the street, an ad campaign, a vintage find or from an amazing style blog. Pinterest never hurts either ;) 

Who are your style/beauty icons?

That's quite a long list, but right now I find myself most inspired by Atlantic Pacific's Blair Eadie. Her personal style is beyond measure, and I've never been more consistently amazed by one person than I am by her.

Describe your personal style.

My style is a cross between girlie vintage, preppy and rocker chic... I'm basically all over the place!

What was the best style/beauty advice you were given?

To dress for your body, not for trends. My mom instilled that in me from an early age, and as frustrating as it can be at times when an on-trend look is really not working for me, I know deep down that she's right... Just don't tell her I said that!

Where are your favourite places to shop?

I love quirky vintage shops, boutiques and what I like to call "the holy trinity" — aka Zara, H&M and Forever 21!  

What are your favourite trends for this season?

Animal print loafers are my ultimate for this season, but I'm also really into blouses paired with statement necklaces, elbow patches and loads of plaid... *sigh* 

Style/Beauty Pet Peeve?

Trying to be something/someone you're not... It shows!

What do you never leave home without?

Mascara

What are your five essential items that you think every woman should own?

Black boots, a chic coat, good jeans, pretty dresses and red lipstick.

Where do you see yourself and your site in five years?

Good question! I hope to be blogging full-time from a much more glamorous city... New York anyone?

What's on your nightstand?

A stack of magazines, hand cream, lip balm and my trusty alarm clock.

Adventures in Pinterest

When I first started using Pinterest I thought it was just another way for me to make lists (I like lists) of things that I covet, but will never own. And, for the first few days it was. And then, I discovered the food and drinks search.

Oh. My. God.

Looking at the pins of food is worse than watching the Food Network, I wanted to eat everything that I saw. After I finally wiped the drool from my face, I noticed that there were a lot of great ideas pinned - a few of which I've tried.

I bring you Adventures in Pinterest.

I'm not really much of a cook. I mean, I can get by, but it's nothing fancy. So when it came time to try my first pinterest recipe I thought I'd keep it simple and make turkey, brie and apple turnovers (my inspiration for this recipe can be found here).

As I mentioned, I'm not much of a cook, so I cheated a bit and used Pillsbury Crescent Rolls instead of making my own dough.

I ignored the Pillsbury provided lines and started off by slicing the dough into rectangles, and then placed the ingredients diagonally on each.

After laying the apple, brie and turkey on the dough, I swaddled them up and got the turnovers ready for the oven.

Bake for 19 minutes and you're done!

Not only was this incredibly easy, but I wrapped the three remaining turnovers and put them in the freezer - perfect for lunches throughout the week!

Easy and delicious - now this is my kind of cooking!

I Should Know Better

I should know better by now.

This story starts three months ago, that's when I first spied a luxurious brown faux fur vest at Forever 21. I was immediately drawn to it. As I continued to make my rounds of the store, I kept finding myself back at the vest, but at the time I couldn't justify the purchase: "Where and when would I wear that?!" I thought to myself. And with that I left the vest on the rack.

Fast forward three months and faux fur vests are everywhere and I am still thinking about the vest that could have been mine.

Like I said, I should know better by now.

Last Thursday, I was having a horrible day at work. Writers block combined with conflict drove me to a state of petite rage, so I decided to treat myself to a little lunchtime shopping and my first stop was Forever 21. Sadly, they didn't have the vest I'd been coveting; they didn't even have one that was similar. But they did have one that I decided to make my own.

Behold dear readers, my new favourite look, something I like to call Yeti-Chic.

I was a little nervous about debuting this look at work. I'm the youngest person in the office by a decade and I wasn't sure how my style would go over. 

Thankfully, Yeti-Chic was a hit! Which gives me hope that it will go over well when I decided to introduce my tiny, casual, West Coast hometown to Yeti-Chic at the end of the month.

Although it wasn't the vest I was originally looking for, I'm very happy that it's now a part of my closet!

Inspiration Monday: the Duff Sisters

I'm cheating a little bit with this Inspiration Monday challenge. Okay, I'm cheating a lot.

I wore this outfit a couple of weeks ago to a casual Sunday brunch, but when I saw this week's inspiration I thought it fit the mold perfectly.

Sweater - Smart Set, T-Shirt - For My Girls by Lola Tsai;
Jeans - Mavi; Shoes - Nine West, thrifted.

A great combination of casual and put-together.

This shirt has special meaning; not only is it super cute and showcases my inner bookworm, but it was made by a good friend of mine, Lola Tsai.

Inspired to change the world, Lola wrote a poem, entitled For My Girls, which aimed at empowering young girls across the globe to set out and reach their full potential. The poem then became a picture book and inspired this t-shirt.

When and why did you start your site?

I started in August of 2009. I like blogging; it’s fun. I’ve also met a lot of great people through my blog, which is the best part of it all.

How would you describe your site?

Right now, my blog has transitioned from being a style blog to more of a personal blog. I still post outfits from time to time, but I also supplement my blog with posts on music that I’m listening to, my random thoughts, and my day-to-day life.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Inspiration is everywhere. Sometimes it’s how a certain song makes me feel. Sometimes it’s the need for bright colours. Ironically, my best outfits are put-together when I’m in a rush and throw on random articles of clothing without a moment’s thought.

Who are your style/beauty icons?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Describe your personal style.

I wear what I like, but usually my personal style depends on two things: 1) the weather, and 2) my mood.

Less is more.

A classic pair of pumps (in black and nude), a black blazer, a chambray shirt, a well-fitted pair of dark skinny jeans, a knitted infinity scarf, and lots of plain, over-sized t-shirts.

I could still be blogging, but in five year’s time, a lot can happen, so I’ll have to wait and see ;)
