Pinspiration Wednesday

The Inspiration:

The Reality:

Sweater - Zara; Blouse & Tights- H&M; Skirt - Jacob; Boots - Aldo

I don't know about you, but I go through phases with Pinterest. Some days I can waste spend hours pinning and repinning; and then there are times where I can't remember why I ever started using the site.

Lately I've been on a huge pinning kick, which is how I came across the above photo of Olivia Palermo. I was immediately inspired, and so excited to try this look out.

Sometimes wasting time can be so productive.

Summer to Fall

Sweater - Zara; Dress - Forever 21; Boots - Aldo

First off, I hope all my East Coast friends and readers are safe and sound! Sandy hasn't hit Ottawa too hard, but I know that's not the case for parts of the east coast of Canada and the US. Everyone stay safe!

I put this outfit together yesterday morning in a rush. For some reason I thought it was a good idea to go back to sleep after turning off the alarm; playing alarm clock chicken is never a good way to start a Monday.

Anyways, I pulled this dress out and decided that summer dresses shouldn't be reserved just for summer. So, I decided to winterize it by adding a cardigan, tights and suede boots.

Worked like a charm; and, now I feel like I've just doubled the size of my closet.

Winterizing: it's not just for your car.

Style Profile: Girl and Closet

Name: Veronika
Age: Thirty-something ;)
Occupation: I run my blog and an online store + design my own jewelry line.
Location: Canada

When and why did you start your site?
I started just over a year and a half ago. As for the reason to starting the blog?! I really wanted to have a little place on the internet where I could post outfits, blog about my married adventures, and my day-to-day inspirations + be a part of the amazing community! It’s been such a fun experience. I'm so thrilled I started the “Girl & Closet” blog.

How would you describe your site?
Well, it seems to constantly evolve. I post a lot about fashion, but I also love to post about personal things... like my weekend adventures that I take with my hubby, and I hope to start sharing more recipes and healthy eating tips too.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I love people watching, going to art shows, concerts, and being around other creative people - that definitely helps me get inspired! And, I love the blogging community too, there is always so much to inspiration.

Who are your style/beauty icons?
I love all things J.Crew + Madewell, Zooey Deschanel, Gwyneth Paltrow and I always pick up the latest issue of Lucky magazine.

Describe your personal style.
At the moment, I seem to be reaching for more classic looks. I’m loving statement jewelry and layered bracelets, trench coats, stripes, over-sized scarves, and whiskey hued leather bags.

What was the best style/beauty advice you were given?
Be who you want to be... don’t worry about fashion, just love & feel comfortable in your own skin. Words to live by, for sure!

Where are your favourite places to shop?
ShopRuche, Modcloth, J.Crew, Madewell, Gap, Zara, H&M, and vintage. I adore scouring thrift shops on the weekend too!

What are your favourite trends for this season?
Bold prints, chocolate & burgundy hues, texture, booties, cable tights, and pea-coats.

Style/Beauty Pet Peeve?
Too much make-up. It just never looks good!

What do you never leave home without?
Falsies, Maybelline mascara and my sunglasses.

What are your five essential items that you think every woman should own?
A great pair of heels, a classic dress that you always feel fantastic in, a trench-coat, a beautiful leather bag, and a statement necklace.

Where do you see yourself and your site in five years?
I absolutely plan on blogging still. My husband and I are trying for a family, so I'm sure that will bring change as well as cause the blog to evolve. But I love that a blog can grow with you - that's kind of my favourite part.

What's on your nightstand?
My IPhone, lip balm, random notes, and my jewelry dish.

Tell Petite Adventures readers something random about yourself.
I have to eat cookies before I go to bed every night - it’s a problem! Haha.

Switch it Up

Dress - Zara; Dress - Paper Planes; Tank - Smart Set;
Boots - Aldo; Watch - Fossil

For my last outfit post of the week, I thought I'd switch it upno more red. But, that's only because I've already showcased all of my red clothes on this here blog.

To switch things up, I wore a dress that's been in my closet for over a year (since Flaunt last November), but this is only the second time I've worn it. It's not that there's anything wrong with the dressthe colours are fantastic and the ruffle down the front is uniqueI just find it hard to wear during the non-sweater weather months. It's a dress that screams for a cardigan. Needless to say I'm very happy it's sweater weather again.

Tomorrow is the last day of my 18-day stretch of alarm clock wake-ups and early mornings, so I hope you'll join me in celebrating by checking out this week's Style Profile of Girl & Closet

Happy early Weekend!

Seeing Red

Top - Zara; Skirt - Jacob; Tights - Zellers; Boots - Aldo

There seems to be a theme in my posts in this early part of the week - I've worn a lot of red.

I've always gravitated towards the colour, but don't tend to wear it that often. However, there was just something about last week; it seemed like a red week.

Psychologists believe that red is a colour that exudes strength and confidence - so maybe that's what I was unconsciously going for.  Even if it was a complete fluke that I wore red three times in five days, it's something I think I'll be repeating much more often throughout the upcoming months.

Because who doesn't love a pop of red on a cold winters day!?

This is Why We're Friends

Dress - Old Navy; Tights - Zellers;
Wedges - Aldo; Watch - Fossil

Last week, while chatting with a friend, I was bemoaning the fact that in all of our technical advances, we still hadn't figured out a way to have laundry do itself. As I was beginning to brainstorm about starting an agency for life interns she blurted out: "Why don't you treat yourself to new outfit?"

This is why we're friends; she's a genius.

However, there was one minor flaw in the plan - I've put myself on a shopping ban for the month of October. After a few more minutes of brainstorming I realized I had some Visa Rewards points I could cash in for a gift card. With just a couple clicks of the mouse, I was now the proud owner of a brand new dress.

Plus, it matches quite well with the red and white animal print shirt I wore in yesterday's post. You see, everybody wins!

The End is Nigh

Sweater - Zara; Blouse - Barefoot Contessa; Jeans - Mavi;
Boots - Aldo; Watch - Fossil

I've made it! I am in the home stretch. After 14 straight days of alarm clocks and early mornings, work and school, I'm just four mornings away from sleeping in! I don't know if you can tell by my use of exclamation points, but I'm kind of excited about it.

My schedule these past couple of weeks does make me reflect on a time in my life when I was fresh out of college and working two jobs. How did I do it? How did I do it without going crazy? But, most importantly, I wonder: How dark were the bags under my eyes? And how did I effectively cover them? So many things to ponder.

Thankfully, I didn't have to think to hard last Friday when I put together this look. Skinnies, a poodle print blouse and a cardigan; perfect for work, school, and everything in between.

A winner every time.

Nailed it!

Shirt - Smart Set; Skirt - Jacob; Tights - Zellers; Boots - Aldo

Do you ever have those days where you look in the mirror, analyze your ensemble, and think: "Nailed it!" Yesterday morning was not one of those days, at least not at first.

Monday had been unseasonably warm, so naturally, I assumed that Tuesday would be the same. I was completely dress and ready to emerge from my apartment with bare ankles, but at the last minute I decided to check the weather - and thank goodness I did because it was four degrees with a high of five. FIVE. I quickly ran to my closet and grabbed whatever was closest and was out the door.

It wasn't until I walked into the kitchen at work and a colleague commented on my outfit: "You look so put together!" It was the best compliment I could have gotten since I'd gotten re-dressed in such a rush.

It wasn't until I got home that I looked in the mirror and thought: "nailed it." Felt great.

Lazy

Skirt - ASOS; Skirt - Jacob, thrifted;
Boots - Aldo; Watch - Fossil

This skirt was a gift from my mom. Months and months ago, she called to tell me she'd found a great skirt at Value Village and was sending it to me. Now, normally when my mom thrifts items for me they aren't exactly my style; so, you can imagine my surprise when weeks later this wool beauty from Jacob arrived in my mailbox - well done mom!

Sadly, it's been sitting in my closet since that fateful day. The hem needed repairing and I was just too lazy to get my act together enough to get black thread and a needle from my sewing box. That is, until two weekends ago. I was sitting at home watching a trio of chick flicks on W when I was suddenly inspired to once and for all cross fixing this skirt off my to do list (and we all know how much I love crossing things off a to do list). Within ten minutes the job was done.

Since then I've worn this skirt twice, and could kick myself that I didn't fix it sooner. Why did I let this wonderful piece sit neglected in my closet for so long!?

I don't think I'll have trouble making up for it this winter; I have a very good feeling this skirt will be in heavy rotation all season long.
